Power Rule

Formulas & Definitions
Core Definition

For any real number n∈Rn \in \mathbb{R}n∈R, the derivative of the power function f(x)=xnf(x) = x^nf(x)=xn with respect to xxx is given by:

ddx[xn]=nxn−1\frac{d}{dx}[x^n] = n x^{n-1}dxd[xn]=nxn−1
Combined with the Constant Rule (ddx[c]=0\frac{d}{dx}[c] = 0dxd[c]=0), Constant Multiple Rule (ddx[c⋅f(x)]=cf′(x)\frac{d}{dx}[c \cdot f(x)] = c f'(x)dxd[c⋅f(x)]=cf′(x)), and Sum/Difference Rules (ddx[f(x)±g(x)]=f′(x)±g′(x)\frac{d}{dx}[f(x) \pm g(x)] = f'(x) \pm g'(x)dxd[f(x)±g(x)]=f′(x)±g′(x)), the Power Rule enables rapid differentiation of any polynomial, radical, or rational power term without computing limit difference quotients from scratch.

Concept Explanation

1. The Power Rule Family of Basic Rules

  • Constant Rule: The graph of f(x)=cf(x) = cf(x)=c is a horizontal line with zero slope everywhere:
    ddx[c]=0\frac{d}{dx}[c] = 0dxd[c]=0
  • Linear Identity Rule: The graph of f(x)=x=x1f(x) = x = x^1f(x)=x=x1 is a line with constant slope 111:
    ddx[x]=1⋅x0=1\frac{d}{dx}[x] = 1 \cdot x^0 = 1dxd[x]=1⋅x0=1
  • Constant Multiple Rule: Multiplicative constants factor outside the derivative operator:
    ddx[c⋅xn]=c⋅(nxn−1)\frac{d}{dx}[c \cdot x^n] = c \cdot (n x^{n-1})dxd[c⋅xn]=c⋅(nxn−1)
  • Sum & Difference Rule: Differentiate term-by-term across addition and subtraction:
    ddx[f(x)±g(x)]=f′(x)±g′(x)\frac{d}{dx}[f(x) \pm g(x)] = f'(x) \pm g'(x)dxd[f(x)±g(x)]=f′(x)±g′(x)

2. The Algebraic Pre-Processing Protocol

Many functions do not immediately appear in the base power form xnx^nxn. Before applying differentiation rules, algebraically rewrite expressions into explicit power form:

  1. Rational Exponent Conversion: Transform radical roots into fractional powers:
    xmn=xmne.g., x=x12,x23=x23\sqrt[n]{x^m} = x^{\frac{m}{n}} \quad \text{e.g., } \sqrt{x} = x^{\frac{1}{2}}, \quad \sqrt[3]{x^2} = x^{\frac{2}{3}}nxm=xnme.g., x=x21,3x2=x32
  2. Negative Exponent Conversion: Move variables out of denominators into the numerator:
    1xn=x−ne.g., 5x3=5x−3,2x=2x−12\frac{1}{x^n} = x^{-n} \quad \text{e.g., } \frac{5}{x^3} = 5x^{-3}, \quad \frac{2}{\sqrt{x}} = 2x^{-\frac{1}{2}}xn1=x−ne.g., x35=5x−3,x2=2x−21
  3. Polynomial Expansion / Monomial Splitting: Expand products or split fractions with a single denominator term:
    3x4−2x+1x2=3x4x2−2xx2+1x2=3x2−2x−1+x−2\frac{3x^4 - 2x + 1}{x^2} = \frac{3x^4}{x^2} - \frac{2x}{x^2} + \frac{1}{x^2} = 3x^2 - 2x^{-1} + x^{-2}x23x4−2x+1=x23x4−x22x+x21=3x2−2x−1+x−2

3. The Algebraic Post-Processing Protocol

After taking the derivative, terms with negative or fractional exponents should be factored and simplified for subsequent evaluation (e.g., finding critical points or higher derivatives):

  • Factoring Out Lowest Powers: When terms have fractional exponents, factor out the smallest (most negative) exponent. Factoring out xkx^kxk subtracts kkk from the remaining exponents:
    3x−12+6x12=3x−12(1+2x12−(−12))=3x−12(1+2x1)=3(1+2x)x3x^{-\frac{1}{2}} + 6x^{\frac{1}{2}} = 3x^{-\frac{1}{2}}\left(1 + 2x^{\frac{1}{2} - (-\frac{1}{2})}\right) = 3x^{-\frac{1}{2}}(1 + 2x^1) = \frac{3(1+2x)}{\sqrt{x}}3x−21+6x21=3x−21(1+2x21−(−21))=3x−21(1+2x1)=x3(1+2x)

Engineering Applications

  • Civil Engineering (Structural Beam Shear): The internal shear force V(x)V(x)V(x) in a bridge girder is the spatial derivative of the bending moment polynomial M(x)M(x)M(x): V(x)=dMdxV(x) = \frac{dM}{dx}V(x)=dxdM.
  • Aerospace Engineering (Atmospheric Density & Drag): Atmospheric pressure and density profiles modeled by polytropic power laws ρ(z)=ρ0(1−αzT0)n\rho(z) = \rho_0 \left(1 - \frac{\alpha z}{T_0}\right)^nρ(z)=ρ0(1−T0αz)n are differentiated with respect to altitude zzz to compute drag variation during ascent.
  • Electrical Engineering (Capacitive Energy Dissipation): The instantaneous power in a circuit element with energy E(t)=12C[v(t)]2E(t) = \frac{1}{2} C [v(t)]^2E(t)=21C[v(t)]2 is evaluated using power rule derivatives.

Solution
  1. Split the single denominator into separate terms:
    g(t)=4t5t2−2t2t2+7t12t2g(t) = \frac{4t^5}{t^2} - \frac{2t^2}{t^2} + \frac{7t^{\frac{1}{2}}}{t^2}g(t)=t24t5−t22t2+t27t21
  2. Simplify exponents (ta/tb=ta−bt^a / t^b = t^{a-b}ta/tb=ta−b):
    g(t)=4t3−2+7t12−2=4t3−2+7t−32g(t) = 4t^3 - 2 + 7t^{\frac{1}{2} - 2} = 4t^3 - 2 + 7t^{-\frac{3}{2}}g(t)=4t3−2+7t21−2=4t3−2+7t−23
  3. Differentiate term-by-term:
    g′(t)=4(3t2)−0+7(−32t−52)=12t2−212t−52g'(t) = 4(3t^2) - 0 + 7\left(-\frac{3}{2}t^{-\frac{5}{2}}\right) = 12t^2 - \frac{21}{2}t^{-\frac{5}{2}}g′(t)=4(3t2)−0+7(−23t−25)=12t2−221t−25
  4. Format answer:
    g′(t)=12t2−212t5g'(t) = 12t^2 - \frac{21}{2\sqrt{t^5}}g′(t)=12t2−2t521
