Concept Explanation

Geometric Meaning: The Tangent Vector

Geometrically, the derivative vector r⃗′(t)\vec{r}'(t)r′(t) is a tangent vector to the space curve at the point corresponding to parameter ttt. It points strictly in the direction of motion (the direction of increasing ttt).

  • If rβƒ—β€²(t)β‰ 0βƒ—\vec{r}'(t) \ne \vec{0}rβ€²(t)ξ€ =0, the curve is called smooth at ttt.
  • Cusps or sharp corners occur where rβƒ—β€²(t)=0βƒ—\vec{r}'(t) = \vec{0}rβ€²(t)=0 or where a component derivative fails to exist.

Vector Differentiation Rules

Let u⃗(t)\vec{u}(t)u(t) and v⃗(t)\vec{v}(t)v(t) be differentiable vector functions, ccc a scalar constant, and f(t)f(t)f(t) a differentiable scalar function:

  1. Sum & Difference Rule: ddt[uβƒ—(t)Β±vβƒ—(t)]=uβƒ—β€²(t)Β±vβƒ—β€²(t)\frac{d}{dt}[\vec{u}(t) \pm \vec{v}(t)] = \vec{u}'(t) \pm \vec{v}'(t)dtd[u(t)Β±v(t)]=uβ€²(t)Β±vβ€²(t)
  2. Scalar Multiple Rule: ddt[cuβƒ—(t)]=cuβƒ—β€²(t)\frac{d}{dt}[c\vec{u}(t)] = c\vec{u}'(t)dtd[cu(t)]=cuβ€²(t)

Orthogonality Theorem for Constant-Length Curves

If βˆ₯rβƒ—(t)βˆ₯=c\|\vec{r}(t)\| = cβˆ₯r(t)βˆ₯=c (a constant magnitude for all ttt), then the position vector and its derivative are strictly orthogonal:

r⃗(t)⋅r⃗′(t)=0\vec{r}(t) \cdot \vec{r}'(t) = 0r(t)⋅r′(t)=0
Proof: rβƒ—(t)β‹…rβƒ—(t)=βˆ₯rβƒ—(t)βˆ₯2=c2\vec{r}(t) \cdot \vec{r}(t) = \|\vec{r}(t)\|^2 = c^2r(t)β‹…r(t)=βˆ₯r(t)βˆ₯2=c2. Differentiating both sides yields rβƒ—β€²(t)β‹…rβƒ—(t)+rβƒ—(t)β‹…rβƒ—β€²(t)=2[rβƒ—(t)β‹…rβƒ—β€²(t)]=0β€…β€ŠβŸΉβ€…β€Šrβƒ—(t)β‹…rβƒ—β€²(t)=0\vec{r}'(t) \cdot \vec{r}(t) + \vec{r}(t) \cdot \vec{r}'(t) = 2[\vec{r}(t) \cdot \vec{r}'(t)] = 0 \implies \vec{r}(t) \cdot \vec{r}'(t) = 0rβ€²(t)β‹…r(t)+r(t)β‹…rβ€²(t)=2[r(t)β‹…rβ€²(t)]=0⟹r(t)β‹…rβ€²(t)=0.

Example Problems

Example 1: Velocity, Speed, and Acceleration of a Spatial Helix

A robotic welding tip follows the path rβƒ—(t)=⟨3cos⁑(2t),3sin⁑(2t),4t⟩\vec{r}(t) = \langle 3\cos(2t), 3\sin(2t), 4t \rangler(t)=⟨3cos(2t),3sin(2t),4t⟩. Find its velocity vector vβƒ—(t)\vec{v}(t)v(t), speed βˆ₯vβƒ—(t)βˆ₯\|\vec{v}(t)\|βˆ₯v(t)βˆ₯, and acceleration vector aβƒ—(t)\vec{a}(t)a(t).

Solution
  1. Velocity v⃗(t)=r⃗′(t)\vec{v}(t) = \vec{r}'(t)v(t)=r′(t):
    vβƒ—(t)=⟨ddt[3cos⁑(2t)],ddt[3sin⁑(2t)],ddt[4t]⟩=βŸ¨βˆ’6sin⁑(2t),6cos⁑(2t),4⟩\vec{v}(t) = \left\langle \frac{d}{dt}[3\cos(2t)], \frac{d}{dt}[3\sin(2t)], \frac{d}{dt}[4t] \right\rangle = \langle -6\sin(2t), 6\cos(2t), 4 \ranglev(t)=⟨dtd[3cos(2t)],dtd[3sin(2t)],dtd[4t]⟩=βŸ¨βˆ’6sin(2t),6cos(2t),4⟩
  2. Speed βˆ₯vβƒ—(t)βˆ₯=βˆ₯rβƒ—β€²(t)βˆ₯:\|\vec{v}(t)\| = \|\vec{r}'(t)\|:βˆ₯v(t)βˆ₯=βˆ₯rβ€²(t)βˆ₯:
    βˆ₯vβƒ—(t)βˆ₯=(βˆ’6sin⁑(2t))2+(6cos⁑(2t))2+42=36sin⁑2(2t)+36cos⁑2(2t)+16\|\vec{v}(t)\| = \sqrt{(-6\sin(2t))^2 + (6\cos(2t))^2 + 4^2} = \sqrt{36\sin^2(2t) + 36\cos^2(2t) + 16}βˆ₯v(t)βˆ₯=(βˆ’6sin(2t))2+(6cos(2t))2+42=36sin2(2t)+36cos2(2t)+16
    Using the Pythagorean identity sin⁑2θ+cos⁑2θ=1\sin^2\theta + \cos^2\theta = 1sin2θ+cos2θ=1:
    βˆ₯vβƒ—(t)βˆ₯=36(1)+16=52=213Β (constantΒ speed)\|\vec{v}(t)\| = \sqrt{36(1) + 16} = \sqrt{52} = 2\sqrt{13} \text{ (constant speed)}βˆ₯v(t)βˆ₯=36(1)+16=52=213 (constantΒ speed)
  3. Acceleration a⃗(t)=v⃗′(t)\vec{a}(t) = \vec{v}'(t)a(t)=v′(t):
    aβƒ—(t)=βŸ¨βˆ’12cos⁑(2t),βˆ’12sin⁑(2t),0⟩\vec{a}(t) = \langle -12\cos(2t), -12\sin(2t), 0 \ranglea(t)=βŸ¨βˆ’12cos(2t),βˆ’12sin(2t),0⟩

Solution
  1. Method 1: Direct Substitution First:
    rβƒ—(f(t))=⟨4(t2)2,βˆ’e3(t2),cos⁑(2(t2))⟩=⟨4t4,βˆ’e3t2,cos⁑(2t2)⟩\vec{r}(f(t)) = \langle 4(t^2)^2, -e^{3(t^2)}, \cos(2(t^2)) \rangle = \langle 4t^4, -e^{3t^2}, \cos(2t^2) \rangler(f(t))=⟨4(t2)2,βˆ’e3(t2),cos(2(t2))⟩=⟨4t4,βˆ’e3t2,cos(2t2)⟩
  2. Differentiate Component-by-Component:
    • xxx-component: ddt[4t4]=16t3\frac{d}{dt}[4t^4] = 16t^3dtd[4t4]=16t3

    • zzz-component: ddt[cos⁑(2t2)]=βˆ’sin⁑(2t2)β‹…(4t)=βˆ’4tsin⁑(2t2)\frac{d}{dt}[\cos(2t^2)] = -\sin(2t^2) \cdot (4t) = -4t \sin(2t^2)dtd[cos(2t2)]=βˆ’sin(2t2)β‹…(4t)=βˆ’4tsin(2t2)
  3. Final Result:
    ddt[rβƒ—(f(t))]=⟨16t3,βˆ’6te3t2,βˆ’4tsin⁑(2t2)⟩\frac{d}{dt}[\vec{r}(f(t))] = \langle 16t^3, -6te^{3t^2}, -4t\sin(2t^2) \rangledtd[r(f(t))]=⟨16t3,βˆ’6te3t2,βˆ’4tsin(2t2)⟩
