Autonomous Drone Flight Kinematics

Formulas & Definitions

Autonomous quadcopter drones navigate urban delivery corridors by evaluating onboard sensor feedback and tracking pre-computed 3D parametric spline trajectories. Aerospace and computer engineering teams decouple the drone's instantaneous flight speed from its 3D directional heading vector using the principal unit tangent vector T^(t)\hat{T}(t)T^(t), which feeds directly into flight control algorithms for gyroscopic attitude correction.

An autonomous quadcopter executes an ascending spiral corridor inspection with 3D position vector (in meters) given as a function of time ttt (in seconds):

r⃗(t)=⟨4cos⁡(t),4sin⁡(t),3t⟩\vec{r}(t) = \langle 4\cos(t), 4\sin(t), 3t \rangler(t)=⟨4cos(t),4sin(t),3t⟩

  1. Calculate the instantaneous velocity vector v⃗(t)=r⃗′(t)\vec{v}(t) = \vec{r}'(t)v(t)=r′(t) and the acceleration vector a⃗(t)=r⃗′′(t)\vec{a}(t) = \vec{r}''(t)a(t)=r′′(t) of the quadcopter.
  2. Determine the scalar flight speed ∥v⃗(t)∥\|\vec{v}(t)\|∥v(t)∥ of the drone and verify whether it travels at constant speed.
  3. Compute the principal unit tangent vector T^(t)\hat{T}(t)T^(t) defining the drone's directional flight heading.
  4. Evaluate the velocity v⃗(π)\vec{v}(\pi)v(π), acceleration a⃗(π)\vec{a}(\pi)a(π), and unit tangent heading T^(π)\hat{T}(\pi)T^(π) at time t=π secondst = \pi\text{ seconds}t=π seconds.
