Atmospheric Density and Aerodynamic Drag (Aerospace Engineering)

Formulas & Definitions

During the vertical launch sequence of a research sounding rocket, the total aerodynamic drag force FdF_dFd (in Newtons) acting against the vehicle casing depends directly on localized atmospheric air density ρ\rhoρ (in kg/m3\text{kg/m}^3kg/m3) according to:

Fd(ρ)=450,000ρF_d(\rho) = 450,000\rhoFd(ρ)=450,000ρ

The atmospheric density decreases exponentially as a function of altitude zzz (in kilometers) above sea level:

ρ(z)=1.2e−0.15z\rho(z) = 1.2e^{-0.15z}ρ(z)=1.2e−0.15z

Furthermore, the rocket's vertical flight trajectory tracks altitude over burn-time ttt (in seconds) according to the kinematic performance equation:

z(t)=0.05t2+2tz(t) = 0.05t^2 + 2tz(t)=0.05t2+2t

  1. Deconstruct the three-layer composite relationship linking force FdF_dFd, density ρ\rhoρ, altitude zzz, and time ttt using the Chain Rule in Leibniz notation.
  2. Differentiate each structural layer independently to find dFddρ\frac{dF_d}{d\rho}dρdFd, dρdz\frac{d\rho}{dz}dzdρ, and dzdt\frac{dz}{dt}dtdz.
  3. Evaluate the rocket's altitude zzz and vertical velocity dzdt\frac{dz}{dt}dtdz at t=10 secondst = 10\text{ seconds}t=10 seconds into launch.
  4. Calculate the dynamic rate of change of the structural aerodynamic drag force with respect to time (dFddt\frac{dF_d}{dt}dtdFd) at t=10 secondst = 10\text{ seconds}t=10 seconds.
